Redcliff begins stands repossession
6 hrs ago | Views

The Municipality of Redcliff has begun issuing letters to residents who have defaulted on payments for their allocated stands, signaling the start of a major repossession initiative aimed at recovering over 1,200 undeveloped residential plots.
Addressing journalists in Redcliff, the council's Acting Director of Housing and Community Services, Ernest Chigwagwa, confirmed that letters of repossession are being sent to individuals who failed to settle outstanding debts by the April 20, 2025, deadline.
"The cut-off date from the 30-day grace period in settling stand debts was April 20, and people came forward during that period and paid. We are now reviewing those who never showed up and writing letters of repossession of the stands," said Chigwagwa.
The repossession drive follows a 30-day ultimatum issued by the council to defaulting residents, targeting approximately 1,200 undeveloped stands that were allocated as far back as 2019. The affected stands span high-density, medium-density, and low-density residential zones, many of which have remained idle for years.
While Chigwagwa confirmed that some residents did comply and made payments within the grace period, he declined to disclose how many avoided repossession.
The municipality's move is part of a broader strategy to address Redcliff's growing housing demand. With over 1,500 individuals currently on the housing waiting list, authorities plan to reallocate repossessed stands to eligible applicants. Particular attention is being paid to areas like Rutendo Extension, which accounts for more than half of the stands slated for repossession.
The council maintains that the decision is necessary to ensure responsible land use and to provide opportunities for residents who are ready and willing to develop the stands.
Affected residents are urged to contact the municipality promptly should they wish to appeal or clarify their status before the repossession process is finalized.
