Ten people lost their lives in a devastating road traffic accident along the Harare-Nyamapanda Road on Wednesday, authorities confirmed.
The accident occurred shortly after 11:30 AM near the 185-kilometre peg in the Suswe area, involving an overloaded Honda Fit carrying ten passengers from Mutoko to Kotwa. The vehicle collided head-on with a haulage truck travelling towards Harare, which had four occupants.
Police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said witnesses suggested that the Honda Fit had veered into the oncoming lane, triggering the fatal collision. All ten passengers in the Honda Fit died at the scene, while the condition of the truck occupants was not immediately reported.
The tragic incident comes amid nationwide police campaigns promoting safe driving ahead of the busy Christmas and New Year period, traditionally a peak time for road accidents. Authorities have urged motorists to exercise caution and adhere to traffic regulations to prevent further loss of life.
