Lower Sixth classes will commence on February 2, 2026, the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education has announced, directing all secondary schools offering Advanced Level education to admit pupils on that date and charge fees on a pro-rata basis.

In a circular addressed to Chief Directors for Provincial Education Services, Acting Ministry Secretary Mr Lameck Mudyiwa said the directive applies to all schools running Lower Sixth classes.

"The commencement date for the 2026 Lower Sixth classes is Monday, the 2nd of February 2026," said Mr Mudyiwa.

"Please ensure that all heads of schools, teachers, parents and the pupils are advised of this date."

The ministry instructed schools to calculate fees for Lower Sixth pupils based only on the number of teaching days remaining in Term One, using each school's approved term fees.

Under the directive, fees will be charged proportionally to reflect the shortened period of attendance during the first term.

"The fees payable by the Lower Sixth pupils will be on a pro-rata basis, according to the approved Term One fees for each school, given by the following formula: number of days remaining in Term One 2026 multiplied by the total approved Term One fees, divided by the total number of days in Term One 2026," the circular stated.

The move is aimed at ensuring fairness in school fees charging while allowing a smooth start to Advanced Level studies for pupils transitioning from Ordinary Level.
