Founders High teacher rapes pupil in science lab

A 40-year-old biology teacher from Founders High School, Obey Rwatiringa, has appeared in court accused of raping a 17-year-old Form Six boarding pupil at the school.

Rwatiringa, from Barham Green, appeared before Magistrate Mark Dzira and was remanded in custody until March 4 for trial. He was not required to enter a plea. He is being represented by Tinashe Runganga of Tanaka Law Chambers.

Prosecutor Hazel Ncube told the court that the alleged abuse began earlier in February 2026 when Rwatiringa reportedly sent the complainant to buy a pie and later made advances toward her. The student subsequently reported the matter to the school's guidance and counselling teacher, Memory Ndumo.

According to the court, on February 21, Rwatiringa allegedly summoned the complainant to the science laboratory under the pretext of extra lessons. He is accused of forcibly removing her clothing and having sexual intercourse with her without consent or protection, despite her resistance and attempts to scream.

The complainant's report led to Rwatiringa's arrest, and to Rwatiringa's arrest.
