Eleven nurses were arrested at Marondera Provincial Hospital on Wednesday and each fined US$30 for public nuisance after allegedly attempting to stage a demonstration over poor working conditions and low salaries.

The nurses had gathered on 25 March 2026 to raise concerns over workplace issues when police moved in and detained them at Marondera Police Station.

The Zimbabwe Nurses Association (ZINA) said it intervened to secure their release and paid the fines on their behalf, describing the incident as part of ongoing tensions in the health sector.

According to ZINA, the nurses had initially met to discuss grievances before being surrounded by police and taken into custody. The association later dispatched legal representation, which facilitated their release.

The arrests come amid growing dissatisfaction among health workers, who continue to cite poor working conditions, low remuneration and limited engagement with authorities.

ZINA said the incident highlights the need for constructive dialogue between health workers and government to address escalating concerns in the sector.
