Masvingo City Council has appealed to residents to visit local cemeteries and inspect the graves of their loved ones following the collapse, sinking and deterioration of a number of burial sites.

The local authority said some graves have been affected by natural wear and tear, weather conditions and ground movement, resulting in structural damage that requires urgent attention.

In a statement, council urged families and relatives of the deceased to take responsibility for maintaining graves and carrying out necessary repairs to preserve the dignity of the resting places.

"Families and relatives of the deceased are kindly urged to visit the cemeteries and inspect the graves of their loved ones. Where graves require attention, owners are encouraged to carry out the necessary repairs in order to preserve the dignity of the resting places and maintain the general cleanliness and safety of our cemeteries," the council said.

The appeal comes amid concerns that neglected and damaged graves could pose safety risks to visitors while also affecting the overall condition and appearance of the cemeteries.

Council said regular inspections by families would help identify graves that require restoration before further deterioration occurs.

Authorities have encouraged residents to work with cemetery management where assistance or guidance is required regarding repairs and maintenance.

The local authority reiterated its commitment to maintaining clean, safe and dignified burial sites, while calling on the community to play its part in safeguarding the final resting places of relatives and loved ones.
