A Beitbridge clearing agent has been sentenced to 280 hours of community service after assaulting his girlfriend when she caught him in bed with another woman.

Ernest Bvunzawabaya (40), of Medium Area in Beitbridge, was convicted by Beitbridge Regional Magistrate Mbonisi Kaweni following the assault on his girlfriend, Praise Majakara (32).

The court heard that the incident occurred on Sunday at around 11am.

Bvunzawabaya, who works as a clearing agent at the Beitbridge Border Post, had allegedly phoned Majakara earlier that day and invited her to visit him.

When Majakara arrived several hours later, she reportedly found Bvunzawabaya in bed with another woman.

According to court proceedings, Bvunzawabaya became angry and started shouting at Majakara before grabbing an iron bar and striking her once on the face.

Majakara fled from the room in an attempt to escape, but Bvunzawabaya allegedly pursued her and punched her several times.

She eventually managed to get away and later reported the matter to the police.

Following his arrest and prosecution, Bvunzawabaya appeared before the Regional Court, where he was found guilty of assault.

Magistrate Kaweni sentenced him to 280 hours of community service as punishment for the offence.

The State was represented by prosecutor Victor Gorejena.

The case serves as another reminder of the criminal consequences of gender-based violence, with courts continuing to warn that disputes in relationships should never be resolved through physical abuse.
