Nehanda ferry victims to be honoured

A memorial service for victims of the Mbuyanehanda boat tragedy will be held this morning at Nyamhunga Stadium, with large crowds expected to gather to mourn those who lost their lives in the Lake Kariba disaster.
The service will be addressed by Mashonaland West Minister of State Marian Chombo and is expected to bring together Government officials, traditional leaders, bereaved families and members of the community.
The tragedy has plunged Kariba into mourning after the Rural Infrastructure Development Agency (RIDA) vessel, formerly known as DDF Mbuyanehanda KF 551, capsized near Long Island while travelling to Chalala Fishing Camp.
The death toll has risen to 44 after police confirmed that 31 more bodies were recovered on Wednesday.
Search and recovery operations are expected to continue today as authorities work to account for all those who were aboard the vessel.
Meanwhile, authorities have moved the Mbuyanehanda from the accident site to Musambakaruma Island, where the vessel is now lying in shallow waters.
Officials said the relocation would make it easier for search and recovery teams to access the vessel and search for bodies that may still be trapped inside.
The operation involves the Zimbabwe Republic Police, the Zimbabwe National Army and other rescue teams.
Chombo is expected to convey the Government's condolences to bereaved families during the memorial service and outline measures being taken to support those affected by the tragedy.
On Wednesday, Chombo visited Mahombekombe and Heights, where she was joined by RIDA director-general Christopher Shumba, Chief Nyamhunga, Senator James Gumpo and Deputy Minister of Tourism Tongai Mnangagwa in addressing affected communities.
Kariba District Development Coordinator Rodwell Mtetwa expressed gratitude to organisations and individuals who have stepped in to assist families affected by the disaster.
"We want to thank those providing food, clothing, and psychosocial support to the affected families," he said.
The memorial service comes as the Kariba community continues to grapple with the scale of the tragedy and awaits the conclusion of the search and recovery operation.
