Harare man bets US$2 100 entrusted to him

A Harare man who was entrusted with US$2 100 to deliver to another person allegedly used the money for sports betting before disappearing from the city.
Tadious Mutevhe (40) appeared before Harare provincial magistrate Ayanda Dhlamini yesterday facing a charge of theft of trust property.
Mutevhe pleaded guilty and was remanded to today for sentencing.
The complainant, Kudakwashe Munetsi, is Mutevhe's nephew and had employed him as his assistant.
Prosecutor Takudzwa Mutyavaviri told the court that on June 25, 2026, while in Harare's central business district, Munetsi entrusted Mutevhe with US$2 100 to deliver to Takunda Mahachi in Avondale.
However, instead of delivering the money, Mutevhe allegedly converted it to his own use by spending it on sports betting.
The court heard that when Munetsi demanded the money, Mutevhe failed to account for it and allegedly continued giving excuses before eventually disappearing from Harare.
Munetsi subsequently reported the matter to the police, resulting in Mutevhe's arrest.
The total amount involved was US$2 100, of which US$1 000 was recovered.
Mutevhe is expected back in court today for sentencing.
