Press statement
The Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions is saddened by the shooting of striking mineworkers at Lonmin Mine in the North West province of South Africa.
It is heart-rending to note that what started off as a labour dispute soon degenerated into violence and South African authorities and police responded with heavy handedness resulting in the death of more than 18 workers.
ZCTU believes the violence that took place followed by the irrational shootings could have been avoided by way of dialogue amongst the striking workers and their respective trade unions, mine authorities and government.
ZCTU extends its condolences to the families of the deceased workers and to the entire working people of South Africa. ZCTU also urges the South African government to institute full scale investigations into the whole incident so as to bring closure to those affected.
In solidarity!
