A KWEKWE miner was in a coma for four days after illegal gold panners allegedly attacked him with machetes in a fight over a memory card.
Edmore Ndlovu was admitted to Kwekwe District Hospital on Monday last week after his attackers, who also robbed him of $600, left him for dead in Zhombe area.
The gold panners were reportedly trying to stop Ndlovu from collecting his memory card from a bar, saying they liked the music on it.
The Chronicle yesterday caught up with Ndlovu at his mother's house in Kwekwe's Mbizo Extension.
He said he discharged himself from hospital after he got word that his attackers - who are still to be arrested - were coming to finish him off.
With both hands in plaster and bandaged cuts on his body, Ndlovu said he was disappointed that police were yet to arrest his attackers.
"I know the people who assaulted me and they're still walking free. They're Tawanda (Sigogo) Oscar Mazadza and Thabani Nduna (Dealer)," he said wiping tears from his eyes.
Ndlovu, who could hardly move his hands, said he was attacked at a nightclub at Zhombe East Turnoff on June 8.
"I'm lucky to be alive. And it's all because of a memory card which I was playing in the club. When I wanted to leave the club at around 10PM, I asked the bar lady for my memory card and she indicated that I could eject it from the DVD," he said.
Ndlovu said as soon as he ejected his memory card, some gold panners approached him asking how he could take the memory card which was playing music they liked.
He said someone punched him on the cheek and he fell down.
Ndlovu said as he crawled to the door he saw one of the panners with a raised machete, trying to strike him on the head.
"I blocked the machete with my right hand. He raised it to strike me again and I blocked it the second time. The machete was leaving deep gashes on my arms," said Ndlovu.
He said he felt hands going into his pockets and pulling out his money.
Ndlovu said he lost consciousness, only to wake up in at Kwekwe District Hospital on Monday.
His mother said she was not happy with the justice system but hoped her son's attackers would be brought to justice.
"I got a phone call from one of my relatives in Zhombe who told me that the boys who nearly killed my son are still to be arrested.
"At the same time they've sent word that they want to come and finish him off. We're living in fear my child," she said.
Nurses at Kwekwe District Hospital confirmed Ndlovu was treated at the hospital and that he had left without being discharged.
They said Ndlovu was referred from Zhombe Hospital because of he was unconscious and had lost a lot of blood.
"He was more dead than alive," said a nurse on condition of anonymity.
"He was unconscious for four days, an indication of how severe the attack was. And there was a police report accompanying him."
Midlands provincial police spokesperson Inspector Joel Goko, however, said he was still to receive a report about the incident.
"I can't comment at the moment because I don't have such a report. Call me tomorrow," said Insp Goko.
