Highlanders FC: The days of crisis should come to an end
23 Feb 2012 at 09:35hrs | Views
The multitudinous supporters of the highly acclaimed Bulawayo giants, Highlanders FC , have begun what could change the fortunes of the Club for ever. The fans have vowed that they now want to help their beloved Bosso via sponsorships of all manner of things that the team needs.
Taking the first challenge in the sponsorship pack is Johannesburg businessman Mr Abraham Phiri who runs a string of businesses in the entertainment, security and hospitality sectors, among others, in Johannesburg and Mpumalanga. He has offered to take care of all the soccer balls needed by the team, pledging to supply the team with a consignment of 10 balls every month throught the soccer season. The First batch of the standard Adidas quality balls has already been procured and the hand-over ceremony will be on Saturday 25 February 2012 at Club 28 (popularly known as Club KwaBulawayo 28 by its diehard fans) adjacent to Tandoor corner Rocky and Bezuidenhout streets.
The first thing that the newly hired coach from Zambia requested was quality balls and the message was relayed to Bosso's South African representatives who include the former Bosso stalwart Alexander Maseko . The challenge is now to secure sponsorship for virtually everything that the team needs so as to restore it to its former glory.
Not to be outdone, other businessmen have also pledged to chip in with other needs of the team. Pledges have been received from as far afield as Canada, the United Kingdom and the USA. But of course pledges must be turned from water (pledge) to wine (delivery).
Numerous plans are at an advanced level including the production of a magazine to educate, inform and bring the team closer to its supporters. A team working on the magazine has finished the inaugural copy in Pretoria and should be ready for official launch at the Highlanders Clubhouse in Bulawayo at end of March 2012. The magazine also covers for the first time the legendary founder of Highlanders FC , Rhodes Njube Khumalo, the grandson of King Lobengula. The magazine, will be of excellent quality as the editorial body includes highly rated academics like Prof Sabelo Gatsheni Ndlovu of the University of South Africa and some respected ex-Highlanders stalwarts like Alex Maseko, inter alia.
The challenge now is to every Bosso supporter outthere to stop complaining aboutinstances of poor team performance and rather do something positive for the club. Ask not what your Highlanders FC can do for you but what you can do for it.
For tomorrow's event, as to be expected, Johannesburg based Bulawayo musicians have promised to come in full force and effect. The imbube group AmaKhosi Amahle will be there. So will be the popular poet Bongani Ncube. KwaZulu's Ibheshwana is sure to steal the show. Not to be outdone rumba groups have also pleadged to come and bless the hand over event. As well as a plethora of popular DJs led by the resident DJ Bheki.
Braai will be on offer as well.
