Berlin - Facebook says it is on top of a wave of spam appearing on users' pages with graphic pictures depicting sex and violence, but is asking people to remain vigilant in safeguarding their accounts.

Facebook in Germany said in a statement on Wednesday that the recent attack tricked users into pasting and executing malicious JavaScript in their browsers' URL bar, exploiting a vulnerability that caused them to unknowingly share the content.

The dapd news agency reports Facebook saying "our team responded quickly and we have eliminated most of the spam caused by this attack" and that "we are now working to improve our systems to better defend against similar attacks".

Facebook recommends in the meantime not copying and pasting unknown code into the address bar and using up-to-date browsers.

The social network is the largest in the world with an estimated 800 million users.
