The government-owned telecommunication firms, Tel-One and Net-One will soon be sharing infrastructure to reduce operational costs and improve service delivery.
It emerged at a meeting between the government and top executives for parastatals within the telecommunications industry in Harare this Thursday that the two parastatals will finalise an arrangement to share infrastructure as part of efforts to reduce charges and lower costs to consumers.
The Minister of Information, Communication Technology, Postal and Courier Services Supa Mandiwanzira told the ZBC News the proposal is also aimed at easing dependency by the two parastatals on treasury in terms of funding requirements for long term capital projects.
"We are definitely going forward with the policy to enhance viability for the telecommunications sector," said Mandiwanzira.
Information and Communication Technology expert Mr Bernard Kasekete says infrastructure sharing for Tel-One and Net-One is also critical in providing a platform for an increased market share for the two parastatals.
"We hope for the best in term of enhancing service delivery which is critical," Mr Kasekete said.
The telecommunications industry is being considered critical in terms of economic development after contributing 15 percent to the country's gross domestic product in 2015.
