Econet Wireless Zimbabwe is considering to introduce ad-blocking on its network through software on its data centres.
The practice has already been introduced in other markets like Europe where mobile operator Three became the first to publicly announce its experiments with the move while other operators were also reported to be pursuing the option.
According to technology news and blogging site TechZim, the telecommunications firm has started exploring the option.
"The operator was investigating the option of introducing ad blocking as a way of helping subscribers manage data consumption and pointed out that the move is not going to be deployed just yet, with room for consultation with media players."
Adverts and pop-ups on various web platforms have been identified as contributors to data usage that subscribers are not always aware of.
Recently the Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe said the number of active mobile phone users has increased by 3,7 percent from the previous quarter to about 12,4 million.
There has been an increasing focus on the individual use of ad blocking software as internet users try to avoid the annoyance that comes with adverts which are used by websites and applications as the ource of revenue.
