Former Finance minister Simba Makoni has disowned a fraudulent X (formerly Twitter) account that disseminates pro-Zanu-PF or government content. The Twitter handle @makonisimbash, which has 535 followers as of the current date, was initiated last month and has posted statements praising Zanu-PF's strength.
Makoni clarified that this account is fake and is not associated with him. He mentioned that he has reported the imposter account to Twitter, but no action has been taken yet. He suspects that the account might be run by Zanu-PF members attempting to create the impression that he supports their party.
Zanu-PF acting director for information, Farai Marapira, distanced the party from the phony Twitter account. He urged Makoni to report the issue to Twitter, as the party does not condone disinformation or the spread of false information.
One of the fraudulent posts on the fake account claimed that Zanu-PF was invincible and had a strong relationship with the people, emphasizing unity, peace, development, and democracy. The fake account also made statements about Sadc's endorsement of Zimbabwe's general elections and congratulated President Emmerson Mnangagwa on his victory.
Simba Makoni, who was expelled from Zanu-PF in 2008 for challenging then-President Robert Mugabe, emphasized that this fraudulent account does not represent his views. He founded the Kusile/Mavambo/Dawn party after leaving Zanu-PF and contested the 2008 presidential election.
