A group of nine medical experts based at the University of Oklahoma Health Science Centre in the USAm is in the country to offer free knee surgical operations at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals in Harare.

Zimbabwe has very few orthopaedic surgeons who are experts in knee surgical operations but they are going to benefit from a team that came from the USA.

The team will offer free knee surgical operations from the 6th to the 9th of November.

In an interview with the ZBC News at the Ministry of Health and Child Care offices, some of the orthopaedic surgeons explained that they have been moving around the world assisting patients with knee problems.

Health Minister Dr Obediah Moyo said the government is working on setting up super specialist hospitals in line with world standards and appreciates such a visit.

"We are open for business and orthopaedic surgery as well, so feel free to enjoy Zimbabwe. You might also want to explore our tourism industry by visiting the magnificent Victoria Falls and other tourist resorts," he said.

Dr Arkim Mageza, an orthopaedic surgeon at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals revealed that such partnerships will go a long way in improving the country's health sector.

"There is going to be a transfer of knowledge between the doctors in Zimbabwe and the visitors who came at time when the country needs medical support," said.

Knee problems are mostly a result of degeneration of bones, trauma, arthritis and injuries.
