PRESIDENT Mugabe's notorious spy agency the Central Intelligence Organisation backed by the police force disrupted a Zapu inter-branch meeting at Mbembeswana Business Centre in Matobo district, Matabeleland South Province, the party's spokesman Methuseli Moyo has revealed.

Moyo said the meeting was initially cleared by the police Zapu officials were surprised when they found a police officer at the venue who advised them that the meeting should not go ahead. On being confronted by agitated party officials, the officer said he had been instructed by his superiors following a phone call from their provincial headquarters in Gwanda to come and stop the meeting.

"Zapu officials led by our member of the Zapu National People's Council, Mr Philemon Mabuza had no option but to comply and announced to people arriving for the meeting to go back home. While Mr Mabuza and his team were still discussing with the policemen, a twin-cab vehicle loaded with CIO agents arrived at the scene and told the policemen in no uncertain terms that he should ask everyone to leave the place immediately," said Moyo.

"The CIO vehicle started driving up and down "furiously" to scare away people who kept arriving for the meeting," he added.

Moyo said Zapu views the latest developments as a clear demonstration that Zanu-PF now feared the very people it was purporting to be ruling. He said it was also clear admission that the people no longer want them in power.

"The establishment now fears to see a group of citizens discussing together. Meetings or no meetings, Zapu has re-established itself and is working quietly and effectively in the villages, towns and cities to prepare for the next polls," he said.

"Meanwhile, Zapu has scheduled another inter-branch meeting at Donkwedonkwe business centre for the 12th of March (Saturday) and at St Josephs on the 19th of March. Our officials in Matobo advise us that the police said the meetings could go ahead, but we fear they will repeat what happened in Mbembeswana," said Moyo.
