A debt dispute turned violent on Tuesday evening when a 23-year-old woman allegedly stabbed a man who had confronted her about money she owed him. The suspect, Mouldy Chinhengo Takaidza of Hobhouse, Mutare, has since been arrested and is facing attempted murder charges.

Manicaland provincial police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka, confirmed the arrest, saying the incident occurred at Penhalonga shops around 7PM on May 13.

"The suspect was approached by the victim, Praymore Masuka (28), who asked her to pay back the money she owed him," said Ass Insp Chinyoka. "Takaidza told him she didn't have it. When Masuka persisted, she became enraged, picked up a kitchen knife, and stabbed him once in the left side of the chest."

The attack happened at a local food outlet. Masuka collapsed at the scene, and the suspect fled—heading straight to ZRP Penhalonga to file a false report, claiming Masuka had attacked her and that she had acted in self-defence.

A well-wisher rushed Masuka to Victoria Chitepo Provincial Hospital in Mutare, where he remains admitted in critical condition.

"Initially, the matter was reported as assault," Ass Insp Chinyoka said. "But after officers visited Masuka in hospital the following day and noted the deep chest wound with no signs of a struggle on his body, the charge was upgraded to attempted murder."

The knife used in the stabbing has not been recovered.

Takaidza was subsequently arrested and is now in police custody. Investigations are ongoing.

Police have urged the public to resolve disputes peacefully and to report any threats of violence to authorities immediately.
