Mother and son jailed for rape of a 15-year-old girl

IN a shocking case of exploitation, a 49-year-old mother and her 29-year-old son have been sentenced to prison for sexually abusing a 15-year-old girl they lured from Chipinge to Harare under the false promise of employment as a domestic worker.
The Harare Regional Court handed the son a 15-year jail term, while the mother received five years behind bars.
Court documents show that on June 10, at a house on Scott Road in Hatfield, Harare, the mother facilitated for her son to accompany the victim where she was supposed to retire to bed knowing that he had bad intentions.
The son went on to have sexual intercourse with the female juvenile without her consent.
The court also established that the mother concealed the offence after the complainant reported the abuse to her.
Both offenders were initially charged with trafficking in persons after transporting the complainant from Chipinge to Harare under the guise of employment.
However, they were acquitted on this charge due to insufficient evidence.
The victim has since been placed in a safe location under protective services.
