Distracted walking has claimed numerous lives in Bulawayo, prompting the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) to launch a public safety campaign targeting pedestrians who cross roads while wearing earphones or using mobile phones.

Police revealed that in 2025, 77 pedestrians died and 143 were injured in 220 road accidents citywide linked to people being distracted while walking. Authorities say at least three such accidents occur daily.

The campaign, held on Friday at Herbert Chitepo Street and Leopold Takawira Avenue, involved educating pedestrians on the dangers of crossing roads while using earphones or phones.

Bulawayo Provincial Police Spokesperson Inspector Nomalanga Msebele urged the public to take responsibility for their safety. "We are educating the public to be cautious and not negligent while crossing roads simply because of phones and earphones," she said.

Inspector Msebele noted that distracted walking has become increasingly common in the era of mobile technology, emphasizing the need for vigilance to prevent further injuries and fatalities.
