Uncle jailed 20 years for rape

A 25‑year‑old man from Chief Nemangwe area in Gokwe South has been sentenced to 20 years in prison after he was convicted by the Gokwe Magistrates' Court for raping his 10‑year‑old niece.
The court heard that on 21 August last year, at around 1pm, the victim returned home from a nearby business centre and found the offender tending to a fire. He indecently assaulted her by fondling her breasts.
When the child attempted to run away, the offender chased after her, caught her, tied her limbs with rope and wire, and raped her.
The victim later told her aunt what had happened, leading to a police report and the offender's arrest.
The National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ) said rape is a grave offence with lifelong consequences for survivors.
"The NPAZ is committed to the prosecution of all sexual offenders. Members of the public are called upon to report sexual violence promptly," the Authority said.
