Man gulps poison at in-laws' home, dies

A 31-year-old man from Buhera has died after drinking an unknown liquid at his in-laws' home in Bikita following a domestic dispute, police have confirmed.

The incident occurred on 27 February at around 6PM in Village 7B under Chief Budzi. The deceased, identified as Courage Zvoumba of Chief Nyashanu in Buhera, had reportedly travelled to his wife's family home in an attempt to resolve marital differences.

According to Masvingo Provincial Deputy Police Spokesperson Assistant Inspector Masauso Patinyu, a misunderstanding arose during the discussions. Zvoumba's wife allegedly informed her parents that she no longer wished to continue the marriage, accusing him of being violent and abusive.

Following the exchange, Zvoumba reportedly produced a 500ml bottle containing an unknown liquid and drank it. He soon collapsed and began vomiting. Efforts by his wife and in-laws to administer first aid were unsuccessful, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The body was subsequently taken to Silveira Mission Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

Assistant Inspector Patinyu urged members of the public to handle domestic disputes peacefully and to seek assistance from community leaders, elders, or relevant authorities when facing challenges.

"Taking drastic action only leads to loss of life and leaves families devastated," he said.
