Highlanders FC earned a late second-half equaliser to draw 1-1 with Bulawayo Chiefs FC in a Castle Lager Premiership clash at Barbourfields Stadium on Sunday, in front of an estimated 10 000 fans.

The Chiefs took the lead in the 28th minute when Zibusiso Dambo capitalised on defensive lapses by Highlanders, finding space outside the box and firing a low shot past goalkeeper Reward Muza.

Highlanders, showing signs of frustration early, had several chances to level the score. Marvin Sibanda was set up by Darlington Munkuli in the 17th minute, while Benjamin Adegoun and Washington Mapuya both tested the Chiefs' defence and goalkeeper Matripples Muleya in the first half, with Adegoun seeing a shot punched to a corner just before halftime.

The decisive moment came late in the match after Mongameli Tshuma was fouled inside the box. Benjamin Adegoun stepped up to convert the penalty, securing a 1-1 draw for the home side.

Highlanders coach and supporters praised the team's resilience on a day when defensive errors nearly cost them, while Bulawayo Chiefs showed sharp attacking instincts but were unable to hold onto their first-half advantage.

The draw keeps both sides in contention in the early stages of the Castle Lager Premiership season and provides Highlanders a morale boost following a tense derby.
