Police have launched a nationwide crackdown targeting vehicles operating without registration plates, including those belonging to government departments.

Authorities say all such vehicles will be impounded and will only be released once the owners complete the required regularisation process in line with the law.

The operation, which is currently underway across the country, has already resulted in hundreds of vehicles being impounded.

National police spokesperson Paul Nyathi confirmed the development, adding that a detailed statement on the ongoing operation will be issued soon.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police recently warned motorists against driving vehicles without proper registration, saying the practice constitutes a violation of the Vehicle Registration and Licensing Act.

Police stressed that the enforcement measures apply to all categories of vehicles, including privately owned cars, company vehicles and those belonging to government departments.

Authorities said impounded vehicles will only be released once owners fully comply with registration requirements.

Motorists have been urged to take the warning seriously as the country intensifies enforcement of vehicle registration laws.

During a similar nationwide operation in 2022, police arrested more than 45 100 motorists for driving unregistered vehicles.
