Hijacker arrested after crashing stolen Mercedes-Benz

A suspected armed robber was arrested in Harare over the weekend after a vehicle he allegedly hijacked with two accomplices was involved in a road accident shortly after the robbery.
The suspect, identified as 21-year-old Tendai Gurupira, was apprehended following the incident, while his two alleged accomplices remain at large.
According to Paul Nyathi, the robbery occurred on March 8, 2026, at the intersection of Chiremba Road and Tokwe Road.
"On March 8, 2026, police in Harare arrested Tendai Gurupira, aged 21, in connection with a robbery case which occurred at the corner of Chiremba Road and Tokwe Road," Nyathi said.
"The suspect, together with his two accomplices who are still at large, allegedly attacked a motorist who was attending to his Mercedes-Benz after it had developed a tyre puncture.
"Subsequently, the suspects reportedly jumped into the complainant's vehicle and drove off at high speed."
Police said the victim quickly alerted authorities after the robbery.
The suspect's escape was short-lived after the stolen vehicle was involved in a road traffic accident at the corner of Chiremba Road and Dunmore Road.
"The complainant immediately called for assistance, leading to the apprehension of the suspect at the corner of Chiremba Road and Dunmore Road after he was involved in a road traffic accident," Nyathi said.
Police said investigations are ongoing.
