Journalist and political analyst Rutendo Matinyarare says President Emmerson Mnangagwa could have earned greater public support had he channelled resources towards development instead of campaigning for Constitutional Amendment Bill Number 3, which seeks to extend his term of office.
Matinyarare made the remarks on X, arguing that the money being spent on the Bill’s mobilisation could have transformed key sectors.
"Imagine how many more roads, cancer machines or ambulances our President could have bought with the money he is using to campaign for the extension of his term?" he said.
"And imagine how much support this would have gotten him? This is what happens when a leader becomes disconnected with the pulse of what the people want because he surrounds himself with yes‑men and not honest advisors who give him the best advice to help him build a good legacy."
Matinyarare said the President was being misled into prioritising political survival over national development.
