The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has issued a statement expressing concern over the assault of prominent lawyer Douglas Coltart during a parliamentary public hearing held at the Harare City Sports Centre.

In a press release dated 3 April 2025, police acknowledged the widespread public attention the incident has generated and confirmed that investigations are underway. The statement noted that cases with political dimensions may present "unique challenges" that can affect the pace and processes of inquiries.

The ZRP emphasised its institutional commitment to upholding the rule of law impartially and professionally. However, the statement appeared to draw a distinction between politically sensitive cases and other investigations, noting that the police have a strong track record of acting decisively in non‑political matters.

According to the statement, the case is now before the courts, limiting further public comment in order to preserve judicial integrity. Individuals implicated in the incident - including Luckmore Tinashe Gapa and Nicholas Hamadziripi - are expected to face legal proceedings, with authorities stressing that accountability will follow if they are found guilty.

The police reaffirmed their commitment to protecting all citizens and ensuring justice is served "without fear or favour".

The assault, which occurred during a public consultation process, has intensified debate around political tolerance and security at public hearings, with civil‑society groups calling for swift and transparent action.
