The Harare International Conference Centre was transformed into a vibrant celebration of nostalgia on Saturday night as the Ecobank Legends Night concert delivered a powerful tribute to Zimbabwe's musical heritage.
The event drew a full house, with tickets selling out in advance and hundreds of fans turned away at the gates, underscoring the growing demand for nostalgia-driven live performances.
Inside the packed venue, the atmosphere was electric as generations of music lovers gathered to relive the country's golden era of sound, fashion and performance.
The surprise highlight of the night came from Bulawayo-based veteran group Cool Crooners, whose brief but emotionally charged performance captivated the audience.
Despite their age, the group delivered a powerful rendition that culminated in a mass sing-along of their classic hit "Bhulugwa Lami," turning the auditorium into a unified chorus of voices.
"It felt like I was young again," said attendee Sibongile Mangoni, describing the performance as deeply emotional and nostalgic.
The Cool Crooners' spokesperson, George Silamu, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to reconnect with audiences, noting that while demand for their performances remains strong, their advancing age requires a more limited schedule.
"We are still doing private functions," he said, adding that the group continues to receive bookings but must balance work with health considerations.
Fellow member Lucky Thodhlana said the crowd's energy lifted their performance, adding that despite their age, "the body remembers" when the music starts.
The group also reflected on changes in the music industry, with member Abraham Ncube cautioning that overreliance on artificial intelligence risks undermining originality in modern music production.
The backbone of the night was provided by Intotal Band, led by Joseph "Sax" Chinouriri, whose dynamic set paid tribute to some of Zimbabwe's most iconic musicians, including Oliver Mtukudzi, Leonard Dembo and Alick Macheso.
Dressed in a striking white suit, Chinouriri guided the audience through a carefully curated journey of classic hits, blending music and memory into a seamless performance that kept the crowd on its feet throughout the night.
Audience members, many dressed in retro fashion inspired by past decades, fully embraced the theme, turning the venue into a living exhibition of Zimbabwe's musical past.
Chinouriri said he was overwhelmed by the turnout and emotional response, noting that the concept had clearly struck a chord with fans across generations.
"We are now taking this concept international," he said, signalling plans to stage similar shows in the United Kingdom, United States and Germany.
