Four suspected drug dealers have appeared in court facing murder charges following the fatal assault of an 18-year-old boy in Harare.
The accused - Shannel Nyakabawo (24), Vimbainashe Jamba (37), Edgar Kazingizi (43) and Robert Sifelani (23) - were arraigned before Harare magistrate Ms Ruth Moyo and advised to apply for bail at the High Court as they are facing a third schedule offence. The matter was remanded to April 7 for indictment.
According to the State, led by prosecutor Mr Lawrence Gangarahwe, the incident occurred on April 19, 2026, around 1am at a residence along Avondale stream in Milton Park, Harare.
The now-deceased Cosmas Gatsi (18), who was staying at a nearby squatter camp, allegedly went to the suspects' residence while following up on a colleague who had gone there to buy drugs.
A misunderstanding reportedly broke out after Gatsi woke the accused, leading to a violent confrontation.
The four suspects are alleged to have assaulted Gatsi using fists and unknown objects, inflicting severe injuries, including deep cuts to the head and chin.
Despite managing to escape from the scene, Gatsi did not immediately seek medical attention.
Police from Avondale Police Station later responded after receiving a tip-off. The victim reportedly identified his alleged attackers during an interview with officers, leading to their arrest.
Gatsi was issued with a medical referral form and directed to Parirenyatwa Hospital, but he died upon arrival before receiving treatment.
Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the assault are ongoing as the case proceeds through the courts.
