Detainee dies after custody fight at police cells

A man has died while in police custody following a prolonged altercation with a fellow detainee at Glen Norah Police Station in the early hours of Tuesday, in an incident now under investigation.
According to sources, the confrontation between the two detainees reportedly lasted about two hours, during which officers on duty allegedly failed to intervene.
"The fight went on for a long time, and the officers on duty unfortunately failed to intervene leading to the death of the suspect," a law enforcement source said.
The matter is expected to be referred to the Zimbabwe Independent Complaints Commission for investigation.
National police spokesperson Paul Nyathi confirmed awareness of the incident and said an official statement would be issued on Thursday.
Further details, including the identity of the deceased and circumstances leading to the altercation, are expected once investigations are complete.
