Council mulls scraping rates for churches

Mutare City Council is considering scrapping the payment of municipal rates for churches, in a move that could ease financial pressure on religious institutions.

Speaking during the 1336th Full Council Meeting at the Civic Centre, Mayor Simon Chabuka said the proposal would allow churches to apply for exemptions, subject to review by council authorities.

"My proposal is that the planning department should go on the ground and place some notices that those who want exemption should write to the council and that can be processed," he said.

However, Chabuka indicated that churches operating commercial businesses on their premises may not qualify for the exemption.

"This may exclude those running businesses on their premises. Let us refer this issue to the relevant committee for further deliberations," he added.

The proposal has since been referred to a council committee for further consideration before any final decision is made.
