Zimbabwean boxer Ndodana Ncube has died at the age of 29 following complications arising from injuries sustained during a boxing match in South Africa earlier this year.
The Zimbabwe National Boxing and Wrestling Control Board confirmed his death, sending shockwaves across the local boxing community.
Popularly known as "The Black Hammer," Ncube reportedly collapsed shortly after defeating South African boxer Lunga Stimela in Middelburg, Mpumalanga.
Medical examinations later revealed that he had developed a blood clot in the brain, forcing doctors to perform emergency surgery before he was admitted to intensive care for several weeks.
Reports indicated that the Hwange-born boxer had initially shown signs of recovery after regaining consciousness, but his condition later deteriorated and he eventually succumbed to the injuries.
Ncube competed professionally between 2018 and 2025, recording 10 wins, eight losses and three draws during his career. Six of his victories came by knockout.
His death has plunged Zimbabwe's boxing fraternity into mourning, with tributes expected from fellow athletes, promoters and supporters.
Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced in due course.
