Residents of Dangamvura are living in fear following a series of attacks by a hooded machete-wielding assailant targeting people walking at night, particularly women travelling alone.

The mysterious attacker, believed to be an adult male, has reportedly been ambushing unsuspecting residents under the cover of darkness, with some reports alleging sexual assaults linked to the attacks.

The wave of incidents has turned ordinary evening movements into a source of anxiety for residents across the suburb.

Acting Manicaland provincial police spokesperson Wiseman Chinyoka referred inquiries to national police spokesperson Paul Nyathi, who was reportedly unavailable for comment due to other commitments in Mvurwi.

Meanwhile, another woman was reportedly attacked near Dangamvura Clinic on Tuesday night.

The victim sustained injuries to her middle finger and reportedly lost her mobile phone during the attack.

According to reports, she managed to escape after a passing vehicle illuminated the scene, startling the attacker and forcing him to flee.

In response to the growing concern, police recently carried out an awareness campaign in Dangamvura urging residents to remain vigilant and avoid walking alone at night.

The campaign focused on the rising risks of assault, theft and other crimes occurring under the cover of darkness.
