Harare Mayor Jacob Mafume says construction of the Airport Road Interchange at the intersection of Harare Drive and Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo Expressway is expected to be completed within the next 12 months, marking another major milestone in the capital's road infrastructure modernisation programme.
Mafume said designs for the project have already been finalised and contractor Makomo Engineering has mobilised equipment and personnel to the site ahead of full-scale construction.
The interchange is expected to significantly improve traffic flow along one of Harare's busiest transport corridors, which serves motorists travelling between the city centre, western suburbs and the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport.
The project comes on the back of the successful completion of the Trabablas Interchange, which has become a key component of efforts to modernise Harare's road network and reduce congestion at major intersections.
According to Mafume, the Airport Road Interchange forms part of a broader government strategy aimed at upgrading critical transport infrastructure in the capital and improving mobility for residents, businesses and visitors.
Several other interchange projects are also at different stages of planning and development across Harare as authorities seek to address growing traffic volumes resulting from urban expansion and increased vehicle ownership.
The proposed interchange is expected to enhance road safety, reduce travel times and improve connectivity between key economic zones and transport routes.
Government has in recent years prioritised road rehabilitation and expansion projects as part of wider infrastructure development efforts designed to support economic growth and urban development.
Once completed, the Airport Road Interchange is expected to become another major landmark within Harare's evolving transport network, complementing other infrastructure projects aimed at creating a more efficient and modern road system for the capital.
