A 36-year-old man from Tsholotsho in Matabeleland North has been sentenced after admitting to a charge of bestiality involving a female goat.

Leonard Moyo of Dugwi Line, Chefunye, appeared before the Tsholotsho Magistrates' Court, where he pleaded guilty to the offence.

Resident magistrate Maxwell Ncube sentenced him to nine months' imprisonment. Three months were suspended for five years on condition of good behaviour, while the remaining six months were suspended on condition that he completes 315 hours of community service.

The court heard that the incident occurred in the early hours of July 2.

According to the complainant, Sithabile Moyo (52), she was awakened at around 1am by unusual noises coming from her goat pen. Concerned that something was wrong, she went outside to investigate.

She told the court that she found Leonard inside the enclosure and immediately alerted her brother-in-law, Edward Moyo, who, together with his son, Thobukani Moyo, went to the scene.

The court heard that the three found Leonard naked inside the goat pen with a white female goat. His clothing was allegedly found nearby, with his jeans and underwear placed on top of the goat pen poles, while his shoes and socks were inside the enclosure.

According to the evidence presented in court, the witnesses confronted Leonard and questioned his actions, but he did not respond.

The matter was reported to the Zimbabwe Republic Police at Chefunye, leading to his arrest and subsequent prosecution.

Moyo pleaded guilty to the charge, and the court convicted and sentenced him accordingly.
