Honda Fit thefts jolt police

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has convened an urgent meeting with car park owners in Bulawayo following a surge in thefts involving older-model Honda Fit vehicles across the city.

The meeting, attended by Assistant Commissioner for Operations Didmus Sakarombe, focused on strengthening security measures at parking facilities and developing strategies to curb the growing trend of vehicle theft.

Police described the thefts as an ongoing concern and urged private parking operators to tighten security at their premises.

Among the recommendations made were the installation and improvement of surveillance systems, maintaining detailed records of vehicles and their drivers, and strengthening communication with law enforcement to facilitate investigations and the identification of suspects.

Sakarombe said closer collaboration between the police and car park operators would be essential in combating the thefts.

He emphasised that partnerships with stakeholders, including private parking facility owners, were critical to reducing vehicle-related crime in Bulawayo Province.

The meeting forms part of the police's broader response to the increase in Honda Fit thefts, with the ZRP pledging to intensify patrols and take swift action against those responsible.

Car park owners welcomed the engagement and committed to implementing the recommended security measures to improve the safety of customers' vehicles.

Police have also urged motorists to remain vigilant and make use of secure parking facilities as efforts continue to tackle vehicle theft in the city.
