Uebert Angel tipped to oust ex-general in Zanu PF

Internal jockeying has reportedly intensified within Zanu PF over the Central Committee position for Nyanga District, with claims that efforts are underway to prevent former Zimbabwe National Army commander Anselem Sanyatwe from assuming the post following the suspension of incumbent member Moses Gutu.

Gutu was suspended after being accused of opposing Constitutional Amendment Act No. 3 and mobilising lower party structures against the constitutional changes, which include provisions extending President Emmerson Mnangagwa's tenure and altering aspects of Zimbabwe's electoral framework.

Although Gutu is expected to appear before a party disciplinary committee, the matter has not yet been concluded.

Despite this, reports indicate that discussions over his possible successor have already begun.

According to party sources quoted by The Standard, Sanyatwe, who is regarded as one of the most senior Zanu PF members in the district, would ordinarily be expected to fill the position. However, some senior party figures are allegedly opposed to his appointment.

One source claimed there were concerns within sections of the party that Sanyatwe could use the position to build an independent political base.

"It's true there is an attempt to block Sanyatwe from the central committee position in Nyanga District, as he is being accused of wanting to build a political base that may upset the Mnangagwa camp," the source was quoted as saying.

Another source alleged that preacher and businessman Uebert Angel was being considered for the position instead, with claims that he enjoys the backing of President Mnangagwa's investment adviser, Paul Tungwarara.

The report further alleged that some party officials opposed to Sanyatwe believe he did not support Constitutional Amendment Act No. 3.

Sanyatwe has previously been identified as a close ally of Vice-President Constantino Chiwenga, although he has not publicly commented on the latest claims.

Responding to the reports, Zanu PF Manicaland provincial spokesperson Phillip Guyo said he was unaware of any contest over the Nyanga Central Committee position.

"I am not aware of any jostling for positions in Nyanga District in Manicaland Province. In fact, there is no news about that. If there is any new information, we will update you," Guyo said.

Efforts to obtain comment from Angel were unsuccessful.

The allegations regarding internal manoeuvring have not been independently verified, and the party has not announced any formal process to fill the position while disciplinary proceedings involving Gutu remain outstanding.
