Village head dies after suspected poisoning

MUDEWAIRE Village in Rusape is mourning the death of village head Lukas Mudewaire (69), who was found dead in his home in a suspected poisoning incident, police have confirmed.
Acting Manicaland police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka said officers attended the scene after receiving a report from the deceased's 76-year-old brother.
According to police, Mudewaire, who lived alone at his homestead, was last seen by his brother on August 4.
"On August 4, he visited his brother and discovered that the bedroom door was open. He knocked on the door and no one answered. Concerned, the brother entered the house and found Mudewaire lying on the floor with no signs of life. A suspected smell of poison was also detected in the room.
"Police attended the scene and inspected the body and found no visible injuries. An empty 500ml container was found in the room," said Assistant Inspector Chinyoka.
Police said the body was taken to Rusape General Hospital for a post-mortem examination to establish the exact cause of death.
Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the death are continuing.
Authorities have not yet determined the cause of death, and the suspected poisoning remains one of the lines of inquiry pending the outcome of the post-mortem examination and ongoing police investigations.
