High-profile jail escape at Mutimurefu

Convicted murderer and rapist Tafadzwa Zimirenyika Janyure, who is serving one of Zimbabwe's longest prison sentences, reportedly escaped from Mutimurefu Prison in Masvingo on Friday night.
Janyure, who was sentenced to life imprisonment and is serving an additional 70-year prison term, allegedly escaped alongside fellow inmate James Masunda, who is serving a 20-year sentence.
According to sources, the escape occurred after the two inmates had attended court proceedings in Masvingo.
Janyure was appearing in connection with another robbery case, while Masunda had attended court as a witness in a separate matter.
The two allegedly breached security at the prison before escaping through the perimeter fence.
Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services national spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Meya Khanyezi confirmed that an escape had occurred at Mutimurefu Prison but said she was still awaiting full details.
"I am yet to receive full details," Khanyezi said.
Janyure was previously convicted of murder, attempted murder, armed robbery and rape.
His escape is expected to trigger a major security operation as authorities work to establish how the two inmates breached prison security and trace their whereabouts.
Janyure was also facing additional charges before the High Court at the time of his escape, adding further significance to the incident.
Authorities are expected to provide more information as investigations into the circumstances surrounding the escape continue.
