Beitbridge starts selection for new CBD stands' owners

The selection process for prospective buyers of stands in the new Beitbridge central business district (CBD) has begun, with the town council prioritising investors capable of constructing buildings of at least four storeys.
Beitbridge Town Clerk Loud Ramakgapola said 33 commercial stands were available in the new CBD, with the council now assessing potential buyers.
Speaking during a full council meeting on Tuesday, Ramakgapola said the selection would be based on applicants' capacity to develop the stands rather than their public profile.
"We have begun the selection process for individuals eligible to buy stands at the new CBD. We have notable names on the list, but we will not be looking at popularity. We will prioritise those that have the resources to build at least four-storey buildings," he said.
The development is expected to transform the town's commercial landscape by creating a modern business hub and attracting investment.
Ramakgapola said work on the new CBD was progressing according to schedule, with the contractor, Tiger Eye, meeting agreed deadlines.
"Our contractor, Tiger Eye, is on schedule with the development of the new CBD. The tarring of the roads will begin this month. We have already applied to connect the roads to the main roads," he said.
The council is also seeking to improve connectivity and access to financial services as part of efforts to stimulate economic activity in the town.
Ramakgapola said improved communication infrastructure and access to local mobile money services would make it easier for residents and businesses to transact and access markets.
"Good communication and access to local mobile money transfers will boost the local economy, since there will be easy access to money and markets," he said.
The planned communications infrastructure is expected to cover areas including Shashi, Masera, Toporo and Swereki.
The new CBD forms part of broader efforts to modernise Beitbridge, a major border town whose economy is heavily influenced by cross-border trade, transport and logistics.
The council expects the development to create additional commercial space, attract investment and improve economic opportunities for residents as infrastructure works progress.
