A 25-year-old man from Toporo Village in Beitbridge who in August last year brutally assaulted an elderly couple with a machete in a botched robbery attempt was yesterday jailed for two years.

Trymore Mguni is also accused of raping his victim while her husband watched. Mguni pleaded not guilty to attempted robbery when he appeared before Mr Innocent Bepura.

He was convicted on the strength of overwhelming evidence provided by the State. Mguni's rape and murder trials are still pending at the regional court.

Prosecutor Mr Marvellous Chikomo said on August 9 last year, Mguni went to Mateo (84) and Litshani Muleya's (83) homestead in Toporo area at around 7pm armed with two huge stones.

He found the couple seated by the fireplace in their kitchen hut and demanded money which the victims indicated that they did not have.

Mguni, the court heard, insisted that the elderly couple had money arguing that their daughter had sold a beast at the cattle sales earlier in the day.

The couple resisted and Mguni pulled out the machete which was behind the kitchen door and struck the husband twice in the head.

Mateo fell unconscious after the attack and Mguni turned to the wife and struck her once in the head.

Mguni then raped the now deceased while she lay unconscious.

He later fled from the scene under the cover of darkness.

The issue came to light when the couple's daughter visited their homestead.

She discovered that the two had wounds on their heads and rushed them to Beitbridge District Hospital.

Litshani Muleya's condition deteriorated after she was discharged from the hospital resulting in her death three days later and the matter was in turn reported to the police.

Mguni had, however, left a pink satchel with his clothes at his victims' homestead.

His clothes were positively identified by his parents leading to his arrest two days later.
