CHAOS reigned supreme in the downtown area of Mutare on Monday afternoon after an enraged motorist heavily assaulted two highway traffic police officers who attempted to arrest him for flouting road traffic regulations.
The Manicapost reports that the marauding motorist, Joshua Manyuchi (42), allegedly grabbed a constable by the collar and shoved him violently before turning his anger on a sergeant whom he head-butted three times. He went on to kick the sergeant resulting in her sustaining some injuries. Members of the public came to the rescue of the traffic cops and effected a citizen's arrest. Acting Manicaland traffic co-ordinator Chief Inspector Cyprian Mukahanana confirmed the incident which happened around 3.30pm along Second Street. "Our two traffic officers were patrolling in the city centre with their BMW service vehicle. They were on their routine traffic enforcement duties along Second Street when they saw a Mitsubishi Canter truck (ABH 1426) parked in the middle of the road blocking traffic. "The officers, Sergeant Moreblessing Mugone and Constable Leon Moyo, approached the accused and told him that he was dangerously parking his vehicle. They also asked him to pay US$10 fine for the offence. However, the accused asked the officers whether they knew him and insisted he could not be arrested for reasons best known to him. The officers told him to get into his car and drive under escort to the Main Camp. The accused resisted and ran away from his car, abandoning it. He stood at a distance." Chief Insp Mukahanana said the officers then contacted a wrecker to tow away the vehicle since it was parked in the middle of the road. "The wrecker quickly responded. Seeing that his vehicle was about to the towed away, the accused came running towards the police officers. He grabbed Cst Moyo by his shirt and violently shoved him off. "Sgt Mugone realised that her subordinate was being attacked and she came to his rescue and attempted to handcuff the accused person. At this point, the accused person left Cst Moyo and then head butted Sergeant Mugone three times on her face. He also kicked her several times on her left leg. Members of the public who were witnessing the violence came to the rescue of the police officers," he said. Manyuchi was taken to Mutare Central Police Station where he was detained. He appeared in court on Tuesday facing charges of assaulting police officers and resisting arrest. He was remanded in custody to February 7, when the case is expected to be tried.
