An ex-cop who lied that top cops were part of Zimbabwe People First leader Joice Mujuru's convoy was yesterday fined $300 for deliberately supplying false information to public authorities.
Shadreck Chingoma Mutota, 58, of Ocean Pentagon in Epworth, pleaded guilty to the charge when he appeared before Harare provincial magistrate Vakayi Chikwekwe.
He was ordered to pay the fine or spend 30 days in prison.
The complainants are Godfrey Munyonga, 50, a senior assistant commissioner at Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) CID Headquarters and Beauty Mangwende, 51, the ZRP chief superintendent stationed at Police General Headquarters (PGHQ).
Munyonga is the director CID while Mangwende holds the position of Staff Officer Education ZRP.
Prosecutor Timothy Makoni told the court that on March 3, Munyonga went to Pfugari Land Developer's offices to get title deeds for a stand he bought in Bindura.
He was in the company of detective assistant inspector Mutanga.
The court heard that when they arrived at the offices, Mutota was at the entrance and they exchanged greetings and parted ways.
Mutota then thought about fixing his former police bosses and recorded the vehicle's registration number which the two were using.
He also recorded registration numbers of two more vehicles, a ZRP Ford Ranger and a Toyota Chaser owned by Tafara Chiturumani.
He then alleged that he had seen the three senior officers escorting expelled former Vice President Mujuru to a venue where she was conducting her maiden press conference.
Mutota shared the fabricated information with Edwin Nyoni and Taurayi Murenga, who are employed by the ministry of Youth as security officers.
Mutota further handed the information to the provincial administrator Alfred Tome before the case was reported to PGHQ.
Investigations were conducted and the three officers denied having been part of Mujuru's convoy or seeing her on the day in question.
On March 4, the police received information that Mutota was visiting Tome at his offices. He was later arrested there for deliberately supplying false information to a public authority.
Police detectives proceeded to Mutota's house and discovered a notepad with a list of registration numbers of cars alleged to have escorted Mujuru.
He was ordered to pay the fine or spend 30 days in prison.
