Salary increment an imperative for the new Cabinet - ARTUZ
07 Sep 2018 at 14:50hrs | Views
Amalgamated Rural Teachers' Union of Zimbabwe, ARTUZ welcomes the new Ministers of Public Service and Finance, Hon Sekesai Nzenza and Hon Prof Ncube respectively. We wish them well during their tenure of office. We want to bring to their attention the urgency of now as they assume office; salary increment.
The sky rocketing of prices of basic goods and services demand urgent intervention from our employer who is also the government, failure of which will force teachers and other Civil Servants to resort to radical measures. The hard working teachers of Zimbabwe deserve a long overdue Conditions of Living Adjustment, COLA to cushion them from the vagaries of the harsh economic conditions.
Learners have already lost learning time because of the 2018 elections and it will be very unfortunate if government chooses to drag its feet on the imperative of a salary increase as this will definitely spark an unprecedented job action.
Amalgamated Rural Teachers' Union of Zimbabwe, ARTUZ recommits itself to the demand of a 100% salary increment and continues to implore worker oriented Trade Unions to join this noble struggle. The 100% has already been eroded by the current surge of cost of living, but we will embrace it in the spirit of patriotism.
ARTUZ hereby warns the government to expeditiously give a salary rise or face a backlash from employees. Teachers are more ready than ever to fight for a living wage. If employer forces them to engage in an industrial action the November 2018 examinations will be aborted.
We remain open to dialogue but we have other means to force the employer to act.
