MDC Renewal Team's statement on land invasions
26 Jan 2015 at 14:38hrs | Views
The MDC Renewal Team has watched in disdain the land grabs currently taking place in Harare's suburbs of Budiriro, Southlea Park and Kuwadzana 4.
The process is as chaotic as it is shambolic. The invaders have not followed council procedures and have taken the country back to the chaos caused by the fast track land reform program of 2000, itself a noble agenda spoilt by bad management of the implementation process.
The Harare City Council has once again demonstrated the non - disputable fact that it is incompetent. It is evident that the long housing waiting list that the Council has for unknown reasons either ignored or is unable to attend to the proper allocation of serviced stands, to the deserving people is causing the desperate situation of land hunger.
While we do not condone those individuals illegally grabbing land, the Harare City Council must be held accountable for its role in creating the mess Harare City is in today. The failure to provide housing stands to residents is synonymous with Harare City Council's inability to deal with the increasing dirt in the streets of Harare.
Harare city councillors and the city management have failed to clean the residential areas, particularly the high density suburbs that are home to the majority of Zimbabweans, as these areas have become a sorry sight.
Service delivery has disappeared from the city agenda and has instead been replaced by corruption, chaos and bad leadership, subjecting citizens to unwarranted misery.
As if to underscore its incompetence, the city leaders have made sure that the dirty streets are accompanied by the scourge of the non- existence of roads, taking citizens back to the Stone- Age, young children no longer know how tarred roads look like. Harare City Council has failed its residents.
We call upon sanity to prevail in the City of Harare. We call upon those that are illegally grabbing land to stop, and most importantly we call upon the City of Harare to allocate serviced stands and to distribute them in an orderly and fair fashion at an affordable price, although we strongly suspect this is beyond you, we challenge you to prove us wrong. It is clear that the City of Harare needs renewal today for a better tomorrow where public service delivery is a matter of excellence.
To the Mayor of Harare, we say deliver public services or deliver your resignation letter!!
