A 29-YEAR-OLD Victoria Falls woman allegedly aborted her four-month twin foetuses before concealing them in a bucket intending to dispose of them.

Virginia Moyo (29) of Chinotimba high-density suburb appeared before Victoria Falls resident magistrate Sharon Rosemani and pleaded not guilty to concealment of birth.

Moyo told the court that she did not abort the two foetuses because it was not her first time to conceive and therefore had no reason to abort. She added that she wasn't aware of the pregnancy.

"I have four children and this has never happened, but the police said I aborted and concealed the foetuses. At first I felt a backache and I wanted to pass out urine. I took a bucket to do so and the foetuses fell in there. It was around 4am and after that I felt too weak to do anything. I closed the bucket and covered it up with bags and went back to bed. I did not know that I was pregnant," Moyo said.

Prosecutor Takunda Ndovorwi told the court that on January 4 this year at an unknown time, Moyo, who was four months pregnant, gave birth to two pre-term babies. She took the foetuses, placed them inside an empty bucket and covered them with bags. At around 6pm her housemate Lillian Mombe got home and found Moyo asleep.

An ambulance arrived at the house and took Moyo to the hospital about an hour later.

When Mombe's children went to bed around 9pm, they reported an unusual odour coming from Moyo's room. Mombe waited for her husband to come and then asked him to investigate the bad odour coming from Moyo's room. He opened her room and saw a green bucket covered with bags with flies hovering over it.

When he removed the bags, he saw the two foetuses in a pool of blood and reported the matter to the police leading to Moyo's arrest. She was remanded out of custody to March 5.
