'National sports kit should be standardised'

NATIONAL sports associations have mandated the Sport and Recreation Commission (SRC) to come up with modalities that will see all national representative sides putting on a standard national kit.
The recommendations were made during the first quarterly meeting between the country's supreme sports body and the sports associations in the capital on Saturday.
SRC director general Charles Nhemachena chaired the meeting held at an up market hotel in the capital.
"The meeting agreed that there was need to standardise our kit used by national representative sides in-line with the trend globally.
"The sports associations mandated the SRC to finalise the modalities and come up with a policy that will be implemented by all sports bodies," said Tirivashe Nheweyembwa the SRC Corporate communications officer.
He said in other countries it was much easier to identify their national representative sides unlike in Zimbabwe where individual sport codes had their own kit, with the only identity being the national flag.
During the same meeting, the 38 sports associations that were in attendance also called for a review of the sponsorship package for the prestigious annual national sports awards which over the years has been bankrolled by Delta Beverages.
Last year the giant company poured in about $50 000 but the associations felt the figure could be reviewed upwards.
"We are obviously indebted to our sponsors for their sponsorship but the sports associations felt the awards have the potential of attracting an even much bigger figure.
"They were however satisfied with how the ceremony went on last year," said Nheweyembwa in an interview with Chronicle Sports yesterday.
The sports associations then recommended that this year's awards be held between 12 and 19 December where it was felt most sports associations would have wrapped up their season.
Meanwhile, there was a marked improvement in compliance with the SRC directive for sports associations to submit their statutory returns by end of next month after threats of deregistration for non compliance were issued in 2011.
Nhemachena urged the sports associations to adhere to good corporate governance as it was the basis for sound administration which in turn attracted the corporate world to come on board in terms of sponsorship.
