Believe the hype: Demi Moore said Thursday that she and Ashton Kutcher are now in Splitsville.
The "Ghost" actress was cryptic about her decision to end their six-year marriage, telling The Associated Press she made her choice in the "spirit" of her ideals.
"As a woman, a mother and a wife, there are certain values and vows that I hold sacred, and it is in this spirit that I have chosen to move forward with my life," Moore, 49, told The AP.
Moore's announcement proved that recent tweets by Kutcher ' including one that incorporated the famous rap song "Don't Believe the Hype" ' were all just digital spin.
Moore added Thursday that she reached her decision to push for a divorce with "great sadness and a heavy heart."
Kutcher, 33, took to his Twitter account Thursday, writing: "I will forever cherish the time I spent with Demi. Marriage is one of the most difficult things in the world and unfortunately sometimes they fail."
The couple tied the knot in September 2005 amid a media frenzy focused on their age difference.
Their relationship seemed happy and secure as recently as this summer, with the couple posting playful pictures of their life together on Twitter.

But the union became tabloid fodder in recent months as rumors swirled about Kutcher allegedly stepping out on her.
Reports surfaced in September that the "Two and a Half Men" star cheated on his wife with a 23-year-old named Sara Leal in a San Diego hotel ' and that the extramarital romp happened on their six-year wedding anniversary.
Kutcher later tweeted a link to the Public Enemy anthem "Don't Believe the Hype," but he didn't specifically address the rumored fling.
He followed with another tweet: "When you ASSUME to know that which you know nothing of you make an A-- out of U and ME."
The couple reportedly had been living apart for months.
They were photographed on a camping trip in Santa Barbara in October, reportedly seeking marriage counselling from their Kabbalah instructor, Rabbi Yehuda Berg.
Moore, who has three daughters with former husband Bruce Willis, has seemed shockingly skinny during recent public appearances for entertainment projects.
"Ashton and Demi have separated and the marriage is over," an unnamed source told Star magazine in September. "It was definitely a long time coming, but they're finally done for good. Ashton was a serial cheater, and Demi just couldn't take it anymore."
