Double amputee athlete Oscar Pistorius has been sentenced to an effective 5 years in prison for the murder of his girl friend in February 2013.

After a gruelling long trial Justice Thokozile Masipa found Pistorius guilty of culpable homicide after he shot his girl friend four times mistaking her of being an intruder.

The judge also found him guilty of improper use of a fire arm at Tasha's restaurant and sentenced him to a suspended sentence of 3 years to run concurrently with the first sentence.

According to South African law on maximum sentence for culpable homicide, Oscar Pistorius will serve a minimum of 8 months in prison which is 1/6 of his sentence before the department of correctional services considers releasing him for correctional supervision. He is expected to serve his sentence in the hospital section of the Kgosi Mampure 2 Prison in Pretoria.

His defence council has not shown any signs of appealing the sentence which actually appears the best that Oscar could walk away with considering facts that he had a possible life imprisonment sentence hanging over his head.
